Footpath lighting for Struer Fri Fagskole

The new communal building for students at Struer Fri Fagskole boasts architecture at its most striking. The structure is made up of five interconnected towers with multi-coloured façades.

Architect Rune Dybkjær from MNT Arkitekter explains that the strong character of the building demanded outdoor lighting that was both distinctive and easy to integrate. The ideal solution was NYE L1004 bollards complete with wooden seat combined with NYE L1002 bollards.

Balance between light fixtures and architecture

Struer Fri Fagskole is a boarding school for young people seeking an alternative to traditional education. The new building provides a leisure and relaxation space for the students and has been designed to fulfil a number of educational aims.

“The distinctive choice of materials and the striking architecture also signify that the young people are special and important to the school. The building faces a busy road, so it also serves to present the school and its identity to the wider world,” says Rune.

The NYE bollards illuminate the pathway running alongside this communal building. However, the main aim was for the interaction between lighting and building to create an appealing ambience in both daylight and darkness.

“Balance was needed between architecture and light fixtures. They were not intended to add further dramatic and contrasting elements. On the contrary, they should enhance the distinctive look,” he says.

Adding lighting to exciting architecture

The NYE bollards ideally complement the shape and material of the building and the lighting experience, in the words of Rune Dybkjær.

“The design is quite simple, yet the lights have a strong character. The details, with carefully tilted surfaces that let the light gently spill out, are particularly striking. The bollards are square and angular, so they have been positioned to align with the curved outlines of the circular towers. We chose Corten steel, since it has nuances and texture and will thus complement the numerous colours in the façades,” he says.

“The NYE bollards provide lighting that reinforces the spirit of the architecture, creating a unified whole,” says Rune.

Henrik Dejbjerg Møller, Sales Manager at Lampas, is also delighted with the lighting at Struer Fri Fagskole.

“It has been an incredibly exciting project to be involved in due to the bold architecture. It was important to us not to overdo the lighting, as the pathway required ambient lighting first and foremost. And it is always fantastic when the architect’s vision is maintained throughout a project,” he says.
