Architect Johannes Lindner studied at the University of Aachen, and his design studio is located in Fürth, Bavaria. Nevertheless, his designs have a Nordic feel, as his design philosophy is based on the same principles of simplicity, meticulous detailing and a human-centered approach.

‘My design work is about creating products that are based on a clear idea and which, through attention to detail and proportion, achieve a clean aesthetic and a strong, unique identity. When you focus on the user and the details of how things are put together, you will naturally achieve high quality in your design. The goal is to create products that are both physically and visually durable,’ he says.

He describes himself as a big fan of Scandinavian design.

‘Scandinavian design is characterised by a simplicity that requires a lot of work. Scandinavian designers work through the details, and the form is freed from unnecessary elements. I have implemented this in my own design process, because it results in high aesthetics and quality in the products we surround ourselves with, both in public spaces and at home,’ he says.

He designed his first product, a wristwatch, while still a student. Thus, Johannes Lindner Design Studio was founded. That was in 2014. In 2018, he graduated as an architect from RWTH Aachen University. This was followed by a year as an architect at an established design firm and five years as a lecturer in the building construction programme at the Technical University of Würzburg-Schweinfurt.

‘I really like building construction as a discipline. Building construction is the essence of architecture because that’s where the vision is turned into reality. It is where the design idea is combined with the logic of construction in a combination of materiality, aesthetics and function. This is also what defines good architecture or good design,’ says Johannes Lindner.

He designed the OTTO L1700 post light because he wanted to create better public spaces. The post light is simple – two circles connected by their tangents – and offers a simple, pleasant, glare-free light. It is designed with low light pollution in mind, using as few plastic parts as possible and ensuring easy disassembly into recyclable materials.

The design was completed in collaboration with Lampas. And that may not be entirely coincidental.

‘I’ve actually known Lampas for a very long time. When I was a child, I was on holiday in Denmark with my parents. There I saw a mailbox that was simply beautiful. Later, I tried to find out who had made this beautiful mailbox. That’s how I got to know Lampas,’ says Johannes.
