ELMAR L3 WALL LIGHT

Design: Friis & Moltke Design

ELMAR L3 is a wall light with a distinctive black cylinder that makes a statement on any wall. It’s a sculptural salute from the 1970s. Yet at the same time, it is timeless with its uncompromising simplicity. ELMAR L3 consists of simply a cylinder, an arm and a wall flange. It is nevertheless pleasing to the eye in its own quiet and well-balanced way.

Friis & Moltke designed L3 in the 1960s to complement their raw style of building architecture, which was known as brutalist. The size and character of L3 were intended to provide effective wall lighting on large brick or concrete surfaces. The light was produced in several versions in the years around 1970.

In 2023, Lampas relaunched this legendary light together with Friis & Moltke Design. The light has been updated to LED technology and the design has been adapted. The most significant change is that L3 is now enclosed at the top, so that the wall light can be used outdoors with a low amount of light pollution. And it has been named ELMAR L3 after Elmar Moltke. Large, striking wall light for hotels, restaurants or conference venues

The ELMAR L3 cylindrical wall light from Friis & Moltke Design is available in two sizes – 160 mm in diameter and 120 mm in diameter. The large model is 285 mm in height, while the smaller version is 215 mm.

The light is powder-coated in black textured Sablé Noir 900. We can supply other RAL colours on request.

The light is made of aluminium. The lighting technology is shielded from below by an aluminium insert, while the light source has a satiné shade.

ELMAR L3 is Dark Sky Approved by DarkSky International and can be used to create a dark-friendly lighting, where blue light, light spill and light pollution are reduced for the benefit of biodiversity and stargazers.

L3 wall light from Friis & Moltke Design resurrected

ELMAR L3 is classic yet retro at the same time. It brings to any space a well-proportioned shape with a clear purpose – a cylinder providing downward illumination. Furthermore, it comes with a history of Danish design and Nordic simplicity that make it more than just a large, black cylinder wall light.

ELMAR L3 delivers clean lines and atmospheric lighting for façades, entrances and staircases. It is equally well suited to residential and commercial architecture and can help to enhance the look of houses, hotels and restaurants.

Historically, L3 was used for the Scanticon hotel and conference centre in Aarhus in Denmark, among other projects. This is now regarded as one of Friis & Moltke’s most distinctive buildings. It was employed here as an architectural element along corridors and staircases.

Lampas began producing lights for Friis & Moltke in 1971. The resulting products included the LIBER L5 wall light and its outdoor version LIBER L5U, as well as the LIBER L6 name plate wall light. ELMAR L3 is the latest in a series of original Lampas lights relaunched in collaboration with Friis & Moltke Design.
